A long wait ends when a team finally gets better. More flair, a better striker, the beautiful football finally crossing the line.

What the boring season actually measured.
Two halves of one machine: the block, a deep wall of defenders that gave the ball away, and a dead-ball operation that scored on schedule.

Nobody else let the ball go like this.
Think of a captain setting a deep field: everyone back on the boundary, singles conceded all day, the big shot denied.
Eleven games in, opponents were making 18.05 passes per defensive action against Arsenal, a league high.

A corner is rehearsed, like net practice.
A football data company said it nine years early: "Goals from set pieces are not luck."
Analysts look for the players who lose the ball in the air, and aim the corner at the space they guard.
Where the ball is aimed, who blocks the defenders, who runs to the near post: everything is drilled on the training ground.
Arsenal's manager Mikel Arteta hired a coach, Nicolas Jover, whose whole job is corners and free kicks.

A scoring chart shaped like a six-yard box.
Every rehearsed corner is aimed at the same few square yards in front of the goal, so the goals pile up there. The marks are drawn, not tracked.

Two flat banks, dropped deep.
The same field setting, drawn. Two lines of four sit deep, and the front pair blocks the middle. The two centre-backs, Gabriel and William Saliba, step up behind them, so the block stays compact instead of sagging onto the goal.
How to read this — Each disc is one player in the position he holds when Arsenal are defending, so the tighter the discs sit, the less space lies between them. The pitch is drawn at a tilt, seen from behind Arsenal's own goal, and it leans as your pointer moves.

The modern title is won at the restart.
Open play is expensive. Everyone is watching it, everyone is defending it, and the ball rarely arrives where you wanted it.
A corner is a reset. Play stops, the ground goes still, everyone takes their positions, and a move the team has drilled a hundred times gets one clean run on the maidan. Arsenal conceded 27 goals all season and scored 25 from set pieces. In other words, the season that looked like a retreat was the one that finally ended the wait.
Open play is expensive and contested. A corner hands you a rehearsed move instead, and Arsenal won a title with 25 set-piece goals and 27 conceded.
