Same forest, two breaking points
The panel above was the slow dial. Here it stands beside the fast one. Add the cutting and two-thirds to three-quarters of the basin could turn to savanna: dry grass and scattered trees.

Cutting here kills trees over there
The Amazon's rain starts the way the monsoon does, and you already know that first half. Wet air comes off the sea and moves inland. But in the Amazon the forest itself keeps that air wet.
Roots draw water from the soil and the leaves breathe it into the air above the canopy.
That moisture drifts inland and falls again. In parts of the basin more than 50% of the rain is made this way.
Clear a patch and the air downwind dries, so drought stress can kill trees hundreds of kilometres away that nobody touched.

Cleared today, and where it tips
So every patch cleared takes rain with it. Here is where the cutting stands, against the tipping point: the state past which the forest cannot recover on its own.
How to read this — The filled arc ends at today's reading, and the marked band sits further along the same track. The gap between them is how much forest is left before the tipping point. That centre figure is the reporters' reading of today, not a figure quoted from the study.
The reporters put today's clearing at 17%, or roughly 17–18%. Four to five per cent of the forest stands between that and the tipping band.

One good year is not the trend
That good year shows up in the world's totals too. Global tropical primary-forest loss fell 36% in 2025, with Brazil driving most of it.

A co-author of the fire study, Paulo Brando, studied how well burned forest grows back. He found recovery "extremely high in these systems, if we give the forest a chance."

One budget moves what a century cannot
A degree of warming takes every nation and decades to move. A hectare takes one line in one country's budget.
On heat alone the Amazon is tough. That means the danger arrives early only when cutting is added. Cutting is the part one ministry or one fiscal year can bend, and Brazil bent it in 2025. Clearing fell 11% there, and global tropical forest loss fell 36%.
Think of the two dials on one machine. One needs every nation, but the other needs one budget. The scientist Carlos Nobre, who helped draw the first threshold, told Mongabay the clearing must stop "by 2040", or "it is impossible to save the Amazon".
Warming takes a century and every nation. Clearing takes one budget and one government, and that is the dial the Amazon answers to fastest.
